About Termites

There are hundreds of species of termites that call Oklahoma their home...don't let your home be one of them!

Subterranean termites build underground nests and are a concern for many homeowners because they are extremely destructive. Termites tunnel into homes (and other wooden structures) and eat their way with an insatiable appetite for wood and other cellulose materials.

Termites are friendly little creatures...well, friendly to each other. They like being with others of their kind...and can have over a million brothers and sisters all living in the same colony.

There are several types of termite "forms."

- King and Queen
- Eggs
- Nymphs
- Workers
- Soldiers
- Winged Reproductives
- Supplementary Reproductives

Identifying termites is easy for professional termite inspectors, but somewhat difficult for many homeowners because several forms (especially the winged reproductives) are frequently mistaken as various ant forms.

Here are the differences:

- Winged ants and winged reproductive termites have two pairs of wings, but ant wings are different sizes while termite wings are all the same size and longer than their bodies.

- Winged ants have narrow waists and elbowed antennae. Winged reproductive termites have thick waists and short antennae.

Both ants and termites can be brown or black, so you can't identify the differences by color. Nymph termites can be white, almost clear, or some other color.
